Taiwanese Kitchen

What do you do in Taiwanese Kitchen VR?

This VR experience is designed to test Ying-Shan Wu's primary research question on learners of Mandarin Chinese. The goal is to determine if grammar explanations before or after the software intervention influence learners' acquisition of the procedural knowledge of cooking scrambled eggs and tomatoes in an authentic Taiwanese kitchen. The effectiveness of this outcome hinges on learners' understanding of cooking instructions in Mandarin Chinese, especially their grasp of the bă construction or the disposal construction in Chinese.

Background and Rationale

I had the wonderful opportunity to help create the technical side of this learning experience. I did no design work; only assisted with technical creation, as Ying-shan Wu acted as the subject matter expert (SME) . Similar to Japanese Office, Taiwanese Kitchen utilizes high-immersion VR to fully engage the user in a virtual environment, nearly completely shutting out the outside world. This highly immersive and embodied experience is expected to result in meaningful learning as full focus can be given to the experience and nothing else.
