This project explored how Augmented Reality (AR) could further elevate “NihonGO NOW!”, the Japanese textbook used at Ohio State. The textbook is rich in culture and authenticity, but it could be further enhanced with AR interactivity to support autonomous learners. While the book contains diagrams for crucial body movements as well as contextually explained text-based dialogues, the static print medium cannot demonstrate how these actions and dialogues are performed. Observation of an act is fundamentally different from reading instructions. Although direct participation is the most ideal, AR provides a powerful observational tool to quickly enhance what is already there in the textbook as well as shown on the website.
As a proof-of-concept, I developed a system allowing students to use their phones to view 3D models and audio clips from the textbook. These augmentations include models demonstrating bowing at various speeds and an avatar performing a brief dialogue. This initial project successfully demonstrates a method for enhancing the text, with clear potential to expand from single models to fully interactive situations. With modest funding, this technology could be integrated throughout the entire textbook.
